Natural language processing engineers build systems that read, classify and generate text. The field changed shape after large language models arrived: far less feature engineering and custom model training, far more work on retrieval, fine-tuning, evaluation and domain adaptation. Indian demand comes from document processing in BFSI and insurance, customer support automation, and search. Classical NLP knowledge still matters for evaluation and for the many cases where a small specialised model beats a general one on cost.
