Depends on the level you need and how many hours a week you can give it. Each CEFR level usually means somewhere in the region of a hundred and fifty to two hundred teaching hours, plus your own practice. So a complete beginner aiming at B1 — the level a lot of work and training routes ask for — is realistically looking at close to a year of steady classes, and B2 takes longer. Intensive weekday batches compress that, weekend batches stretch it. Ask for teaching hours per level rather than months, since that's the only number that lets you compare two institutes.

They're the CEFR levels, the standard scale used across Europe. A1 is absolute beginner — greetings, introducing yourself, basic forms. A2 covers simple everyday conversation. B1 means you can handle ordinary situations independently, and it's the level commonly asked for in training and vocational routes. B2 is the level most employers and universities want. C1 and C2 are advanced. Most institutes in Pune teach one level per course, so check which level your batch starts and ends at, and whether the institute runs the next one.

It depends what you're applying for, and getting this wrong is expensive. The Goethe-Zertifikat is the most widely recognised general German certificate and runs from A1 to C2. telc and ÖSD are alternatives accepted for many of the same purposes, ÖSD being the Austrian one. TestDaF and DSH are different — they're specifically for admission to German-taught university programmes. Visa rules and university pages name the exact certificate and level they want, so read that requirement first, then find a class that prepares for that exam. Ask the institute directly whether they teach to it, and where the exam itself is conducted.

Most institutes in Pune quote on enquiry rather than publishing a price, so it's worth calling a few. When you do, ask for the price per level including GST, whether books and material are extra, and whether the exam fee is included if you plan to certify. Ask about discounts for booking multiple levels together and what happens if you need to pause and rejoin a later batch.

It has more concrete uses than most languages, which is why people stick with it. Germany's work and study routes generally expect German at a defined level, with vocational training and healthcare roles usually asking for B1 or B2, and family reunification visas asking for a basic certificate. Closer to home, Pune has a substantial German-linked engineering and automotive presence, so German is genuinely useful in client-facing, documentation and support roles here without leaving the country. Being straight about it though: A1 or A2 won't change your CV or your visa prospects. The levels that open doors are B1 and above, and that's a year or more of real commitment. Decide whether you're in for that before you pay for A1.

Work backwards from the deadline, not forwards from today. Find the exact certificate and level your visa or university requires, find out when that exam is actually held and how far ahead you need to register, then count back the teaching hours needed to get there. Only then pick a batch. The thing that catches people out is batch start dates — some institutes only open a given level a few times a year, so a level you need in March may not have a batch starting until June. Ask about the next three start dates for every level you'll need, not just the one you're joining.
