An SDET is a software engineer whose product is the testing system: frameworks, harnesses, test data infrastructure and the pipeline integration around them. The distinction from automation testing matters commercially — SDET roles sit in product companies, are interviewed like development roles, and are paid closer to engineering than to QA. Indian demand is concentrated in product firms and capability centres rather than services companies, which makes the openings fewer but considerably better compensated.
